Description:

Aluminium fluoride(AlF3) is an inorganic compound used primarily in the production of aluminium. This colourless solid can be prepared synthetically but also occurs in nature.

Aluminium fluoride is an important additive for the production of aluminium by electrolysis. Together with cryolite lowers the melting point to below 1000 °C and increases the conductivity of the solution. It is into this molten salt that aluminium oxide is dissolved and then electrolyzed to give bulk Al metal

Applications:

Aluminum fluoride is used by aluminum producers to lower the melting point of electrolytes in the smelting process and increase production efficiency. It is also used as a flux ingredient for the removal of magnesium in the refining of aluminum scrap. When magnesium-bearing aluminum alloys are melted, fluoride reacts with the magnesium and permits removal of this element. This enables remelters to produce aluminum alloys substantially free of magnesium. The ceramic industry uses aluminum fluoride for some body and glaze mixtures and in the production of specialty refractory products. Aluminum fluoride is used in the manufacture of aluminum silicates and in the glass industry as a filler.

Aluminium fluoride is primarily used in the production of aluminium. It is a critical additive to the molten electrolyte in aluminium metal production. Using today's technologies, it is impossible to manufacture aluminium without AIF3. Adding AIF3 allows the electrolytic process to take place at a temperature around 850°C, which is considerably lower than the melting point for aluminium oxide (Al2O3, mp ab. 1,500°C). As a result of its temperature-lowering properties, AlF3 has a definite energy saving effect.
